"We had a great time with Prince of Whales! Every staff member we encountered was very friendly and highly informative throughout the trip. The boat itself was comfortable and well-appointed, making the journey very enjoyable. The complimentary hot drinks was a bonus. The highlight was seeing a couple of pods of whales. I was very impressed by how the crew handled the encounter; they kept the boat at a respectful distance to protect the wildlife, while positioning the vessel so that every passenger got the best views possible. The complimentary photo package was vey helpful as it meant that you could spend the precious time watching the whales knowing that you are going to be sent photos later. Highly recommend this tour!"

Avis des visiteurs
Ce que disent les observateurs
"The boat was comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating. The inside was warm and while snacks were available for purchase, they did offer complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Dress warmly because it does get cold on the open water. The scenery was beautiful. We saw some seals, a sea lion and finally a family of orcas. The free photos were much better than mine. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wildlife we saw."
"Such a great experience! Andrea, Micheal and the other naturalist (I’m so sorry I forget her name) were so great and knowledgeable. We saw 3 humpback whales and several sea lions, although the sea otters were hiding. Easy booking and boarding. Wouldn’t definitely recommend!"
"Incredible! This tour was the highlight of our Canada trip with our lifelong dream of seeing orcas coming true. A special thank you to Reid, Michael and Jessy for being so kind and happy to help. Richard and Sandy did a fab job of keeping us safe and being in the right places at the right time!"
"The boat was top class; smooth, comfortable and plenty of room. The whole crew from Capt. Michael, First Officer Sandy and the very knowledgeable naturalists Megan, Michael and Reid made the trip interesting and exciting. I can't recommend this tour enough."

Frequently Asked Questions About Victoria Whale Watching
What to know before booking a whale watching tour from Victoria's Inner Harbour.
Victoria whale watching tours start from about $112 per person for a three-hour trip, with the most-booked covered vessel at $154 including photos taken by the crew. Open zodiac trips run from $138. Every tour featured here includes free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so booking early costs nothing if plans change.
Victoria is closer to the whales. Its Inner Harbour sits next to Haro Strait and the Juan de Fuca Strait, which is core summer territory for the Southern Resident orcas, so boats reach the animals without first crossing the Salish Sea. Typical transit is 60 to 90 minutes from the dock. Vancouver trips are excellent too but usually spend longer getting there. If you are already in Victoria, there is no reason to cross back to the mainland to go whale watching.
Bigg's transient orcas, which hunt marine mammals, are present year-round and are the most reliably sighted whale. Humpbacks are common from roughly June through October. The endangered Southern Resident orcas — the J, K and L pods, about 75 animals in total — use Haro Strait in summer, though sightings of them are far less predictable and legally must be given a wide berth. You will also usually see Steller and California sea lions, harbour seals, harbour porpoises and bald eagles.
The main season runs roughly April through October, peaking June through September when humpback numbers are highest and the Southern Residents are most likely to be in the area. Bigg's orcas are here all year, so shoulder-season trips still have a strong sighting record and cost less. Winter sailings are limited.
Most Victoria operators offer a sighting guarantee in the form of a free re-ride rather than a refund: if no whales are seen you can sail again on another day. Sighting rates in peak season are high because the operator fleet shares locations over radio, but no honest operator guarantees a sighting outright. Check the specific policy on the tour you book.
Almost all of them leave from the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria, within walking distance of the Empress hotel and the Legislature. The most-booked covered tour boards at 812 Wharf Street. Being able to walk to the dock is one of the practical advantages Victoria has over mainland departures.
Take the covered vessel if you are travelling with children or older relatives, if the forecast is cold or wet, or if you would rather have crew photograph the encounter for you. Take the open zodiac if you want speed and to sit low at the waterline, and you do not mind being exposed for three hours. Both reach the same whales; the difference is comfort, not access. Zodiacs typically have no washroom aboard.
Not as close as photographs sometimes suggest, and that is deliberate. Canadian regulations set minimum approach distances for killer whales in these waters, with a larger buffer for the endangered Southern Residents, and operators risk their licences by breaching them. Good crews position the boat and let the animals choose the distance. Bring a zoom lens rather than expecting the vessel to close the gap.
In July and August, yes — the most-reviewed departures sell out days ahead, particularly morning sailings and weekends. Outside peak summer you can often book a day or two out. Since every tour here carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before, reserving early is the low-risk option.
Dress several degrees colder than the forecast: it is markedly colder on the water, and wind chill at speed is significant even in August. Layers, a windproof outer, closed shoes and sunglasses are the practical minimum. Zodiac operators supply flotation cruiser suits over your own clothes. Sunscreen matters more than people expect because of glare off the water.
