"Francisco was our skipper on the Kodiac. He was great, fun and very knowledgeable and passionate about marine life. When it looked like we may not see any whales, Francisco was on it... very focused and found a pod of killer whales. He was very careful to keep the boat a safe distance from them so as not to scare them. We followed them for quite a while before we had to leave and get back. It was like two excursions in one...first the trip out and back on the Kodiac which was alot of fun, then second - being able to observe the pod of Orcas in their natural habitat. A great experience. Thank you Francisco."

How the Victoria Whale Watching Tour Works
Four steps from the Inner Harbour to the orcas of Haro Strait.
Check In at the Inner Harbour
Board at 812 Wharf Street on Victoria's Inner Harbour, a short walk from the downtown hotels. Crew brief you on safety and on what the day's sightings have been.
Board the Covered Vessel
Step onto a purpose-built vessel with an indoor heated cabin, open sundecks and a snack bar. The captain positions the boat parallel to the animals so everyone gets a view.
Search the Salish Sea
Cruise the waters off Victoria toward the Gulf Islands, San Juan Islands and Howe Sound — your naturalist crew radios in resident-orca, humpback, gray-whale, and Steller-sea-lion sightings, sharing local marine biology along the way.
Collect Your Free Photos
Back at the Inner Harbour, download the included photo package — professionally shot wildlife images you can use without paying camera-gear money. Sailings run as half-day trips; check your voucher for the exact departure.

Victoria Whale Watching
Is the Open Zodiac the Right Boat for You?
It reaches the same whales as the covered vessel. The difference is exposure, not access.
The open zodiac is the most-reviewed whale watching product in Victoria — 676 reviews at 4.6/5 — and it is also the one most likely to be the wrong choice if you book it without knowing what it is.
What the Boat Actually Is
A rigid-hulled inflatable, low and fast, with you seated at the waterline. There is no cabin, no indoor seating, and typically no washroom. Operators issue full-length flotation cruiser suits that go over your own clothes, because the wind chill at speed is significant even in August.
The appeal is real and specific: you sit close to the surface, the boat is nimble enough to reposition quickly, and the whole experience is louder and more physical than a cruise. People who love it, love it precisely for that.
Who Should Not Book It
- Anyone with back or neck problems. Zodiacs pound in chop; the impact is transmitted straight through the seat.
- Young children and less mobile older travellers. Most operators set a minimum age, and three hours with nowhere to go inside is a long time.
- Anyone who wants photographs. You will be holding on. The covered vessel with crew photos exists for exactly this reason.
- Anyone booking a marginal weather day. On the covered boat, weather is an inconvenience. On a zodiac, it is the whole trip.
What It Costs and What You Get
From $138, about three hours on the water, departing the Inner Harbour. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is worth using: if the forecast turns, move the booking rather than enduring it.
Same Whales, Either Boat
This matters and is often misrepresented: the zodiac does not get you closer to the whales. Canadian approach-distance rules apply to every vessel equally, with a wider buffer for the endangered Southern Residents. What the zodiac changes is how it feels to be out there — closer to the water, not closer to the animal.
If that trade appeals, this is the best-reviewed way to do it in Victoria. If it does not, take the covered boat and enjoy the same encounter warm.

What Whale Watchers Say
"We had an amazing 3-hour Zodiac tour from Victoria. We’ve done several whale watching tours abroad in the past (which are always quite pricey) but we never actually managed to see anything. This time was different: we saw a total of 6 Orcas, which was incredibly special for us and made the trip more than worth it. We were given special suits to wear. They worked perfectly; despite being on a fast boat, we didn't feel the cold at all. Our guides, Josh, Amanda, and Francisco, were great. We really liked that at the end of the trip, they took the time to show us the route we had sailed and explained why they chose that specific path to find the orca's. After so many attempts elsewhere, it was a relief to finally see these animals in the wild. Highly recommended if you're in Victoria!"
"Amazing, great crew Luke - excellent driver and guide. Saw orca, bald eAgles and seals. Highly recommend this experience."
"Luke the guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining!"
"Great boat trip out & got to see lots of humpbacks"

Victoria Zodiac Whale Watching — Questions
The things people ask before booking this trip.
About three hours on the water for the Victoria-departing tours, and a full day for the seaplane package from Vancouver. Add time either side for check-in at the Inner Harbour.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure on every tour featured here. That makes it sensible to book early and move the reservation if the forecast turns, rather than waiting for certainty and finding peak-season sailings sold out.
No honest operator guarantees a sighting. Most Victoria operators offer a free re-ride if no whales are seen rather than a refund, and peak-season sighting rates are high because the fleet shares locations by radio. Check the specific policy on the tour you book.
Victoria's Inner Harbour, walkable from downtown hotels — the most-booked covered departure boards at 812 Wharf Street. The seaplane day trip instead departs from the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre.
Layers and a windproof outer regardless of the forecast, closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. It is markedly colder on the water than on shore, and glare off the surface is stronger than people expect. See what to bring on a Victoria whale watching tour for the full list.
